In a dizzying field of guest speakers, Jamie McDonald is not only an expert, but a dynamic and entertaining breath of fresh air who is making an impact on people’s lives all over the world.
After he battled and overcame serious illness as a child, Jamie’s desire was to thank the hospitals who helped him by raising money to help other children overcome their illnesses.
As his physical abilities were restored, Jamie decided to put them to use in a series of bold and exciting adventures. In 2012, he embarked on his first superhero adventure, hopping on a secondhand bike and riding over 14,00 miles from Bangkok back to Gloucester.
But he didn’t stop there. Jamie then hit the road with his feet, running across Canada following the path of his Canadian fundraising hero, Terry Fox. After a little break, he was further inspired to tackle a whopping 210 marathon run around America.
Whilst undertaking these epic challenges Jamie encountered many obstacles and increasingly dangerous situations – from injuries, to losing the tip of his nose to frostbite and an all too close encounter with a mountain lion! But whatever was thrown at him Jamie always remained determined, tackling his goals with grace and good humour, which is just one of the reasons why he’s such a brilliant guest speaker.
Even when he’s not running or cycling around different parts of the world, or indeed writing best-selling books about his exploits, Jamie has fundraised and smashed world records much closer to home.
Jamie took on a 12-day static bike ride and simply didn’t stop (yes, his bum was sore!), as well as covering 524 miles in 7 days, running on a treadmill which saw him break a Guinness world record in the process.
These are gruelling physical and emotional feats and levels of endurance that no woman or man has ever reached before.
For Jamie it’s not all about adventures, he has also raised more than a million pounds for sick children through his charity, Superhero Foundation, and recently won one of the most prestigious honours and awards in the country, ITV‘s Pride of Britain.
