Job alert.. MARKETING GURU!
👋 Hiya, my name is Jamie McDonald, aka Adventureman, and I’m on the hunt for a marketing guru…
Once upon a time, I was a sick kid myself. For the first nine years of my life, I was in and out of hospital with a rare spinal condition called syringomyelia.
At nine years old, I was lucky that my condition didn’t worsen and as I grew healthily, I set about putting a new found love of movement to a force of good. Cycling 14,000 miles from Bangkok to Gloucester; running 5,000 miles across Canada, 5,500 miles across the U.S, and broke two gruelling Guinness World Records — pedalling 12 days non-stop on a static bike (yes, I had a very sore bum) and covering 536 miles on a treadmill in just 7 days — all in a mission to give back to the hospitals that helped me as a kid. In 2019, I tipped raising over a million pounds for sick kids and was awarded the Pride of Britain for ‘Fundraiser of the Year’.

Nowadays, I speak on stage for a living, support corporates with their charity fundraising challenges and run my own charity, Superhero Foundation.
Here’s where I need your help. Read below 👇
Hours: 25hrs per week | Pay: £25,000 – £30,000 a year
It’s going to take someone really special – a jack of all trades who’s great at writing, loves social media, is tuned in to what people think and feel but also has a solid understanding of marketing across the board.
You’ll need to have a fire in your belly and love to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.
I’ve been told I’m asking too much, that this person doesn’t exist, but I know you’re out there.
Maybe you’ve worked at a start-up and have had to roll your sleeves up to do a bit of everything?
Maybe you’ve done years in the corporate world and are ready to use that background, have even more fun, let loose and make a big difference?
You’ll be my right hand person (left-hand, actually — I’m left handed) and we’ll be working together so closely, that you’ll be feeding a banana to one of my kiddies while we throw creative ideas around, wondering, ‘how did I get here?’
HERE’S THE ESSENTIALS
🖊️ Is great with the written word — understands brand voice, can knock up a blog or post in no time at all, knows how to craft a great story and understands what people think and feel from your words. (PS: AI can’t do the written skills for you, no robots allowed, sorry!)
📲 Loves social media. Understands the algorithms, keeps up to date with the platform changes and knows how to create and edit for LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. And loves to create short stories.
🫡 Knows how to come up with a marketing plan and make it happen. Loves to be organised (because I’m not!) and is used to thinking ahead. While I ‘wing it’, you ‘plan it’.
👥 Are a real people-person. You’re happy to chat on the phone or via email – and can manage freelancers for one-off and on-going projects. You know how to interact with followers, respond to comments, and build a strong sense of community.
💪 Crazy challenges: that’s right, you’ll be helping to get the word out while I do mad challenges – when I’m not being a dad, or speaking at an event, I’ll be doing challenges, raising money for charity – specifically for a new initiative called ‘Ward Buddy’, so no kid is left alone in hospital.
I’D LOVE IT IF YOU HAVE THIS TOO:
We can learn this stuff together as we go along, or outsource it to freelancers.
🤘🏻Sales experience and CRM: Knows how to reconnect with old clients and develop strategies to find new ones.
📧 Experience of running a newsletter
💰Understands paid media — specifically social media.
What might you be doing day-to-day?
As I’ve said, it’s a bit of everything. And we can start with where your experience is then fill in the gaps with either learning it (if you want to) or outsourcing it to freelancers if it’s not your bag / not a strength.
Things on the to do list include:
🌐 Strategy Development: Own the MEGA PLAN for all our marketing and keep us on track / make sure we’re spending energy in the right place.
📲 Social Media Content Creation: Curate captivating content across all social media platforms.
🚀 Paid Media: Develop and execute paid social media advertising campaigns to increase brand awareness.
📊 Analytics and Reporting: Monitor and analyse social media performance to provide insights and improve how we show up in the online space.
📰 Press Releases: Create and send out press releases and also maintain relationships with journalists.
📸 Photography: Create visual content, it could be while I speak, or doing a big charity challenge, better still, it might be hanging out with my little kids – be prepared for cuteness over load.
🖊️ Blogs: Write purposeful SEO blogs for the website to continue to reach more people.
👥 Community Engagement: Interact with followers, respond to comments, and build a strong sense of community and brand loyalty.
🤝 Work with others: working with other freelance marketers to support us where we don’t have the skills or time to do it.
🎥 Videography: create story boards and produce engaging videos, including behind-the-scenes footage and innovative ways of telling my story.
💡Events: I speak at a lot of events every year, we need to capture some of these experiences as I tell the story to a live audience – and then work out how to share the story of the event online via social media.
✉️ Newsletter: be able to use Mailchimp, or another platform to shoot out regular emails to people on the mailing list.
👉 Sales: Manage the database of speaking clients on Pipedrive and work with me to decide out how and when to get back in touch, but also how to reach out to new speaking clients.
💪 Giving Back: Work with another marketer from our charity, Superhero Foundation — in supporting big fundraising challenges to get donations in to help sick kids.
Location:
Ideally Gloucester, Stroud, or Cheltenham (and anywhere nearby). If you’re not located nearby, still apply, I’m open to working with someone virtually, if you’re the super-duper right fit.
Hybrid:
If you live close by, it will be a mix of working from home, and with me in person, we can drink tea, coffee, or even the odd cheeky beer or vino!
Why 25 hours?
Just to be clear this is a permanent role. The reason it’s not full-time hours is that I don’t work more than 25 hours a week (I’ve got three very young kids, including twins, yes, TWINS). I believe in quality work, not quantity.
The hours are super flexible, if you have a family of your own, great, I totally understand the need for being flexible!
